An aside: I was in Lumpini, Bangkok awhile ago for a conference and buying trip. One of the attendees of the conference whom I've known for awhile and lives in Bangkok invited me to an opening at the Art Republic. I was excited to see some work by contemporary Thai artists. I love modern art, furniture, architecture, you name it. Just recently I was checking out an online Italian dining room furniture website looking at the designs by some of today's most recognized names. Lucky for me the brick and mortar store's showroom was located in the city where my parents live, Philadelphia, so I decided to surprise my folks with a visit. I usually spend a while looking at styles online and then, if possible, go to a showroom where I can see the actual piece of furniture I am considering buying. Italian modern furniture is stunning and the choice of dining tables and chairs by renowned Italian designers at Room Service 360° boggled my mind. When I mentioned the online site to a friend of mine she remarked that the store had hired a professional seo company, SEO ZEN NYC, to help the store with their social media campaign on Facebook and Pinterest. How did she know this, I asked. Apparently, SEO ZEN NYC was the same company my friend used when setting up her e commerce business and needed help with SEO compliance issues. Sometimes the internet makes one's world so connected with others in such unexpected ways. Sorry for the digression about contempoary Italian furniture... My trip to Art Republic was fruitful. I was impressed by the work I saw there and ended up buying a stunning painting. The piece I bought at the gallery still hangs in my dining room with my new contemporary Italian designed dining room table and chairs.

CONCEPT

We see nature as a sort of sanctuary, a halfway house for passing drifters.
People are so busy nowadays that we don’t think about it, we don’t include it in our routine, it seems as if nature is only a friend when we’re travelers.
Even when we do not appreciate it, nature finds a way to include us.
We neglect the realities of nature, adventures that translate into great stories are not appreciated by us, realities of leeches, ants, being confined by the woods or a soothing walk gone bad, this is a pattern of society, we do not like things that are not ideal, when things deteriorate, we run.
Like everything else, natures changes with time. We cannot see time, like we see nature.
Time is not something we can romanticize,we can romanticize events within time, but does the actual time have a face, does it have a name?

Time takes the shapes of things, because time never ever stands still.
I wish for the concept of time to take the shape of our surroundings, of nature that constantly picks itself up and moves on. Nature takes its own course whether in the shape of a cloud or a steady flow of the river, not unlike time, it evolves.

CONCEPT
There's always been a kind of ritual in our family; old things that were once used, or even rugged possessions
that should be long forgotten, bags, hats, and things that I deemed personal. These so called treasures
were interwoven with memories that appear like flashes of images, of happy times with my family and loved ones.
Each and every object represents something, resembling treasures stored in an old cardboard box.

CONCEPT

When I first started to paint this series, I was thinking about what my farang friends were telling me about their experiences with Bangkok nightlife. I myself, often party with both Thai and farang friends at different venues all over Bangkok. Sometimes in pubs and bars, sometimes at a friends house, or very often at my own place.

As these joyous memories came back to me, and with the addition of a little music. I found myself dancing in the studio and started to paint this series of paintings. Which I hope whoever sees them will enjoy them as much as I did painting them.

BACKGROUND

Piengrutai is a self taught artist. She started painting full time in 1997, her main medium being oil and acrylic on canvas.

She currently resides in Australia and Thailand.
